Chennai Super Kings will battle Kolkata Knight Riders on April 28 at the Cheapuk Stadium, Chennai from 8.00 PM. Chennai has been in excellent form after having beaten Kings XI Punjab by 97 runs, whereas Kolkata’s last match against Rajasthan was washed out due to rain. Chennai Super Kings has won 5 matches and are second on the points table whereas Kolkata Knight Riders are on third. It promises to be an exciting battle between these two teams who have the won IPL title twice each.
Previous Year Clashes:
The first time they met last year was at Ranchi on 2nd May. It was a low scoring affair. It was a rain affected match reduced to 17 over’s a side. Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bat. Chennai Super Kings lost the early wicket of Smith but Mcullum and Raina put a 70 runs partnership for the second wicket. Mucllum scored 56 and Raina 31. Dhoni and Jadeja scored some vital runs in end to help Chennai post 148 for 3 in 17 over’s. While chasing Kolkata lost wickets at regular intervals and were never in the run chase. The top scorers for Kolkata were Uthappa with 47 and Yusuf Pathan with 41. Chennai Super Kings won the match by 34 runs.
After 18 days they met again but this time in Kolkata. It was again a low scoring affair. Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field. Chennai lost the early wicket of Smith, after that McCullum and Raina put on 55 runs second wicket partnership. After Raina got out nobody was able to give the team a great ending as Chennai scored 154 for 4 in 20 over’s. While chasing Kolkata Knight Riders got off a great start with Gambhir and Uthappa put a 64 runs first wicket partnership. Uthappa scored a well made 67. After losing both the openers Manish Pandey and Shakib AL Hasan finished the match. Kolkata Knight Riders won the match by 8 wickets with 12 balls to spare.
Brendon Mucllum looked in great touch against the Kings XI Punjab in the previous match. He took the bowlers apart and made the batting look very easy. He was dropped twice and was punished for dropping those two catches. He scored 66 off 44 balls and helped Chennai Super Kings post a comeptitve total of 192. He attacked every bowler and didn’t let them to settle down. Against Kolkata Knight Riders, his role will again be to provide a solid start to the team so that Chennai Super Kings can post a huge score on the board.
Ashish Nehra has been the best bowler for Chennai Super Kings in this tournament so far. He has picked up wickets with new ball and has reduced the pressure on the spinners. He picked 2 wickets against Kings XI Punjab. In todays match against Kolkata Knight Riders, the responblity lies on him to pick early wickets to put pressure on their strong batting line up.
Robin Uthappa has looked out of sorts in this edition of the IPL so far. He needs to score big runs if they have to challenge a top quality side like Chennai Super Kings.
