It was the senior Indian Opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir which helped Delhi in their victory over Punjab in West Zone T20 games for Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament 2014. With this win Delhi recorded their third win in three games and topped the North Zone points table.
Sehwag and Gambhir are moving closer towards selecting into National team, as they put on another useful stand for Delhi and contributing in their win. Chasing a target of 175 set by Punjab, Gambhir and Sehwag gave a glorious start to the innings. They both put on 78 for the 1st wicket off just 34 balls. Gambhir who scored 40 of just 25 balls hitting 5 fours and 1 six was the first among the both to be dismissed.
Sehwag on other end played a master pice innings he scored 65 of just 35 balls smashing 13 fours of those 65 runs he scored. He took on RP Sharma who dismissed Gambhir hitting him for 6 fours in an over. He got dismissed run-out, with 33 runs short of win with 37 balls remained. Later Quick innings from Sumit Narwal who scored 42 of 23, helped Delhi to finish game with 10 balls to spare with losing just 6 wickets.
Earlier in the game Punjab scored 174/7 in 20 overs after been put into bat at the Mohali PCA Stadium. Openers Mandeep Singh and Manan Vohra stated well but middle order couldn’t gain on it. With this win Delhi enter the Knock-outs of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Tournament.
Sehwag scored 22 off 20 in the second game against Jammu & Kashmir, where Gambhir just scored 4 runs.
