Indian team’s Dashing Opener Virender Sehwag finds some form after smashing a century in his style in a county match. He is representing Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) XI against Durham played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. He also the Captain of MCC XI and his century in the fourth innings of the match helped his team to win the Day/Night 4-day fixture by 6 wickets.
Virender Sehwag came to bat on day three at No.4 when his team was on 39/2 with another 185 runs to win. He remained unbeaten at the stumps with 9 off 15 balls hitting two boundaries.
With 176 needing on final day Sehwag started the day for MCC XI aggressively. He began smashing 3 fours in first four balls extracting 14 runs. He continued his flow smashing boundaries regularly. He completed his fifty off just 47 balls which included 8 fours. He put on 67 with England’s Daniel Bell for 3rd wicket and took the chase towards victory. But he continued his innings pace maintaining a strike rate over 110. He went to lunch at 95 off 85 balls with 52 runs more is team needing.
He smashed 2 fours in three balls he faced after lunch to complete his 38th first class century. He smashed 17 fours and six by then. Later he was fell after scoring 109 off just 97 balls which included 18 fours and a six with a strike rate of 112. His 105 run partnership of just 17.4 overs with Samit Patel took them closer to the win. Later Patel along with Prassana Jayawardene ended took them past victory.
Earlier in the match Durham won the toss and chose to bat. They were bundled out for 248 with help of Monty Panesar’s five-wicket haul. Later MCC XI scored 282 taking a lead of 34. In this innings Sehwag failed as he was dismissed after scoring just 5 runs. In the 2nd innings Durham were dismissed for 257 setting MCC XI a target of 224 to win the game.
Sehwag who has been out of form recently got ousted from the National squad. His last century in recognized cricket came when he scored a century over England in October, 2012 at Ahmedabad. The match between MCC XI and Durham was played in mark of Lord’s Stadium’s 200th anniversary which will be followed by a couple of T20s in which Sehwag will play again for MCC XI and Muttaih Muralidharan will be captaining the team.
