The discarded Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan, in the first game of the Deodhar Trophy 2016/17, made a statement as he struck a century to kick off the last domestic tournament of this season on a high. Dhawan, who scored just 99 runs in five Vijay Hazare Trophy games was selected in the India Red squad as selectors still see him as a future prospect.
The Delhi-lad opened the innings with skipper Parthiv Patel and both the senior players put up a partnership of 93 runs in just 16.2 overs. After Parthiv’s dismissal, Dhawan continued to drive the team forward. He shared 103 runs with Ishank Jaggi before completing his 21st List A century in 114 balls with 10 fours and a six.
He was looking good for big innings but was dismissed on 128 when Manoj Tiwary caught him off Deepak Hooda. In total, his innings comprised of 13 fours and three sixes.
With this innings, Shikhar Dhawan presented a case for Champions Trophy in front of national selectors. Though he still has Indian Premier league in front of him where he can perform to present his case but it’s important for him to keep the selectors take a note of him in each tournament he plays.
At the end of 45 overs, India Red had scored 285 with the loss of six wickets.
