India went into the tea on day 1 of the second test with the scorecard reading 206-3. KL Rahul is unbeaten on 98, just 2 runs away from his second test ton and Rohit Sharma is accompanying him on 17. Virat Kohli was the only wicket in the session as he was caught by Angelo Mathews off Rangana Herath for 78.

After surrendering in the first test, India were off to a shaky start in the second test match at the P. Sara Oval, Colombo. After winning the toss, India lost two early wickets before KL Rahul and Virat Kohli stabilized the innings with an 85 run partnership for the third wicket as India ended the session at 97-2.

Murali Vijay was the first to be dismissed as he was trapped plumb in front off Dhammika Prasad for zero in the very first over of the match. It was when the Indian fans were given a shock by the team management as Ajinkya Rahane, who had a great run in the Indian team over the past 18 months came out to bat after the fall of Vijay’s wicket. It was a surprise because Rohit Sharma was supposed to bat at number 3 and because of his poor run in the recent matches, he was demoted to number 5.

Rahane, too didn’t last long as he was done in by a Prasad delivery that moved away from him after pitching just outside the off stump. It was enough to get a slight edge from Rahane’s bat and fly into the hands of Dimuth Karunaratne’s hands at the slip cordon.

Few overs, Rahul had his heart on his mouth as a ball from Dushmantha Chameera nicked his bat and flew to Jehan Mubarak at gully as Mubarak failed to hold-on to a straight forward catch. Rahul is unbeaten on 39 while Kohli is batting on 48. Prasad took both the wickets for Sri Lanka conceding 29 runs in 8 overs.

Earlier in the day, Kumar Sangakkara was given a guard of honour by his teammates and the ball boys present at the venue.

Brief Scores: India 97-2 (Virat Kohli 58*, KL Rahul 39*, Dhammika Prasad 2-29) vs Sri Lanka.
