Stats: Virat Kohli Writes His Name In History Books With Another Double Century
Dec 11, 2016 at 1:42 PM
After Virat Kohli scored 147* on the third day of the ongoing fourth Test between India and England in Mumbai, England batsman Joe Root had said:“A number of runs Kohli scored this series, if you take those away, it’s a completely different series.”
Well, one can say that Root’s comments make a lot of sense. The Indian run machine has scored 617 runs in the series until the lunch on the fourth day of the Test. The runs have come at an astonishing average of 154.25 and the way he is batting, the stats are only going to get better.
His batting has gone to a whole new level ever since he replaced MS Dhoni as the Test skipper. He has now scored eight centuries in 21 matches as a captain and his average of 66.45 as skipper is the second-highest for any captain who has led his team in 20 or more Tests. Only the legendary Don Bradman is ahead of him on this list.
And the Indian batting sensation Virat Kohli has now entered the record books with another brilliant knock as he scored his third double century of the year in Wankhede.
Kohli has now become only the fifth batsman to score three double centuries in the longest format of the game in a calendar year, joining Sir Donald Bradman (1930), Ricky Ponting (2003), Michael Clarke (2012) and Brendon McCullum (2014).
The India Test skipper has also become just the third captain to score three scores of 200 or more in a calendar year. The list is led by former Australia skipper Michael Clarke who scored four scores of over 200 in 2012. Kohli has also now scored more than 2500 runs this year across all formats and has become only the 11th player to achieve the incredible feat. He has also become the first player to score three double-centuries in three consecutive series.
