Twenty Five years ago, on this day, Sachin “TON”dulkar scored his first International ton against a fine England bowling attack at the historic Old Trafford in Manchester. He was just 17, the age when most of the Indian kids would be busy in preparing for their final exams in schools.

India were in a bothering position in the fourth innings after India were set a target of 408 to win by the English skipper Graham Gooch. It was almost impossible to chase and India just needed to survive the test match. But shortly after lunch, India were collapsed to 109 for four losing the main wickets of openers Novjot Singh Sidhu, Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar and Sanjay Manjrekar. It was when Tendulkar came to the crease. He had 119 runs to his name and together with Manoj Prabhakar, 67 not out, had added 160 in an unbroken seventh-wicket stand. They had seen India to 343 for six, to safety and a chance of squaring the series. At a quarter past six, with two overs of the game remaining, Gooch called off his quest for victory and Tendulkar was able to pluck off his helmet and walk from the field.
