Just a few days after showing a desire to host a Mini IPL by BCCI, it has come to notice that the BCCI has shortlisted U.A.E. and North America as the likely venue for the Mini IPL. A final decision on this is expected to be taken in 2 or 3 weeks. A source has confirmed this news TOI. Revealing some more secrets the source also added that the BCCI will soon table a meeting with the franchises to discuss the new T20 league.
A few days back the BCCI showed interest in organizing a Mini IPL outside the country; this decision took the IPL franchises by surprise as they were not taken into confidence before taking a decision over this. They were not conveyed a formal message by the BCCI but now the board is planning to organize a meeting with the franchises so as to discuss the future course of action regarding the Mini IPL.
Mini IPL is a replacement of Champions League which was scrapped off last year due to lack of interest of the public. Empty stands and low TRP’s were a regular part of Champions League. The tournament was more of a liability than an asset.
There are speculations that the Mini IPL will be held somewhere around September when Indian team will come back after wrapping up the West Indies excursion. Still, a final decision regarding tournament format, fixtures, the number of matches, availability of players, the number of teams is yet to be taken but we will see BCCI coming up with the final model of the league anytime soon.
U.A.E. has earlier hosted few matches of IPL in the year 2014 when the security forces in India showed its incapability to prove security for the IPL due to General Elections of 2014. A total number of 20 matches were played in U.A.E. before the tournament returned to the home country.
Currently, U.A.E. is the home ground for Pakistan cricket team and hosts all its matches.
