On April 27, 2006, Irfan Pathan, who was considered as one of the seam and swing bowler emerge from India after Kapil Dev, become the second bowler in the history of Test cricket to claim first over hattrick. He also became the second Indian after Harbhajan Singh to register a hattrick in Test cricket.
During India’s second tour of Pakistan after the 2003-04 revival series, the third and final Test of the series was played at the Karachi National Stadium. The first two Tests did not produce any result.
At Karachi Irfan Pathan gave India a magical start. He swung balls of fire that scorched the Pakistan top order. Butt played the first three balls awkwardly. Captain Rahul Dravid placed an attacking fielding with three slips and a gully.
In the fourth ball of the first over Pathan’s full-length ball pitching middle of the pitch took a late swing and confused Salman Butt played at it tentatively. The ball took the edge and went towards slip. Captain Rahul Dravid at first slip dived and took a sharp low catch.
India got a dream start in the series decider. Pakistan were yet to open their account. Younis Khan was the new batsman at the crease. Rahul Dravid had a reason to feel confident as his decision was fruitful.
Everybody can chalk out their decision, even could Rahul Dravid at slip before Pathan deliver his second slip. But red hot Irfan Pathan was in his best shape. So, he with the cunning pace in the fifth delivery that again took late swing perfectly pitched in the middle and it nails Younis lbw right in front of the stumps. Younis Khan out. Pakistan 0 for 2.
India was on fire, Pakistan were at receiving end. Irfan Pathan’s swing was unplayable. Winter was yet to come in Pakistan. A foggy morning seems like a smoke of Pakistan’s burning in the hand of Irfan Pathan.
The Pakistan dressing room was shivering, Irfan’s was yet to deliver his last ball of the over. The classical Mohammad Yousuf came at the crease. Will he deny or Pathan will have the fun? Tension engulfed fans both sides of the border. Cricket fans can’t expect this kind of excitement in the very first over of a Test match.
But, Pathan has had a different idea for Yousuf. He requested his captain one more fielder at gully. But, the delivery castled Yousuf by a pearl of an inswing. A sensational moment at the National Stadium. Pakistan three down with a duck on the board.
The entire Indian team picked Pathan on their shoulder to acknowledge the young boy’s achievement. And the 22-year-old boy floats himself in enormous pleasure. He did not make a vociferous celebration. Proud Pathan screamed as he become the second bowler in the world to claim first over hattrick. And the first Indian pacer to achieve this record.
