Virat Kohli Decodes 2014 ‘Horrific’ England Test Tour

Indian captain Virat Kohli has finally decoded what went wrong on the 2014 England’s Tests tour, which by distance has been his most disappointing series so far in his career.

Speaking to former England captain Nasser Hussain, Virat said his technical disorder in batting and too much desperation to succeed in England happen to dent his image as a batsman, who could just bolster under any circumstances. During the five matches in England, Virat scored just 134 runs in ten innings at a horrible average of 13.40. To add more misery to these numbers, Virat couldn’t notch up even a single fifty on the tour in Tests as his highest score remained as only 39.

Explaining, what he felt about his own slump in form, Virat said he did put too much pressure on himself, which eventually upset his mindset and resulted in getting himself exposed in the wet and damp conditions of England.

“I had put too much pressure on myself before going to England that I needed to score here. I don’t know why sub-continent players are given different benchmarks that we have to perform in certain countries and if you don’t do that, you are not considered a good player. I think it was more about me being desperate to do well in England and then when you don’t do well at start, you start going down mentally.”

Virat, who recently scored his 27th ODI century against England in the Pune One Dayer, believed he had a fault in his technique back then and that he intended to play with strong bottom hand, omitting any chances countering the out-swingers, which did most of the damage. Proclaimed to have the made blunders by not rendering his technique, Virat got out many times by nipping the ball towards the slip cordon.

Virat Kohli found it too hard dodging the moving ball during 2014 England’s Tests tour.

“Technique is important but even people with not that strong technique have been able to score well there because of a good mindset. The problem with me was that I was expecting in-swingers too much and opened up my hip a lot more than I should have done. I was constantly looking for the in-swinger and was in no position to counter the out-swing.”

Post the tour, Virat had a successful outing in Australia later that year, having amassed colossal 692 runs in four matches at a healthy average of 86.50. In the recently concluded Test series against England, the right-handed batsman was the highest scorer, smashing 655 runs with one double hundred and a ton.

Having a look at his technique, he seemed to have made changes and now matured enough to keep his mindset straight heading into any tour from now onwards.
