Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has backed Antonio Conte led Chelsea to sign Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann.
The 48-year old believes that the Frenchman has the quality to help Chelsea win another league title next season as there has been increasing speculation of Diego Costa leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.
Merson who made 350 appearances for Gunners also believes Chelsea’s No.2 striker Michy Batshuayi cannot fill in the shoes of Diego Costa once the Spaniard leaves the club and urged them to sign the talented Griezmann.
‘Batshuayi hasn’t brought much to the table but has he really been given the chance? When Costa hasn’t played he hasn’t filled in, perhaps he doesn’t look good in training,’ Merson told Sky Sports.
“If he does leave then Chelsea will have to replace him.
“I’d like to see them pay as much as it takes to get Antoine Griezmann because he will win them the Premier League again next year.
“I don’t think Chelsea should get rid of Batshuayi but it will come down to whether the player wants to learn on the fringes or play all the time.”
Griezmann is considered as one of the biggest targets for Manchester United this summer as the 25-year old is one of the best centre forwards in the world. The Red Devils are ready to launch a massive £80million to lure him away from Atletico Madrid.
Griezmann has scored only 16 goals so far this season in 31 appearances for Los Rojiblancos and could leave the club in the summer as they are very poor in the league so far this season.
Despite interest from United, the French striker had cast doubts on his move to Premier League as it could massively affect his lifestyle. However, lack of silverware at Madrid could help the English giants to lure him to Premier League.
