Arsenal have emerged as the latest team to lure Benedikt Howedes over a possible summer move in the Premier League. This news will not be welcomed by their bitter rivals Manchester United who were hoping to seal a move for the £14 million rated Schalke’s central defender in the summer.

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has made the defensive signing his top priority for next season and Van Gaal eyes the German International defender as the perfect signing who can operate as a central-back or as a full-back.

Arsenal have recently signed a central defender in Gabriel Pauliste but with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny aging fast and Calum Chambers being inexpereinced in the league, Arsene Wenger is looking to sign Howedes who can be the ideal replacement for Mertesacker and be the leader at the back which Arsenal fans have been wanting to see since Tony Adams’ departure.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are in a fix to find to find the right player to sort out their defensive woes. Players like Mats Hummels, Marquinhos, Raphael Varane, Aymeric Laporte are the few men who top the list but Van Gaal sees Howedes with his versatility as the perfect fit for his 3-5-2 philosophy and will go head to head against Arsene Wenger for the signature of Benedict Howedes.

It will be an interesting battle between the expereinced manager specially with Arsenal’s new and improved financial strength in the transfer market. Arsenal will not shy away from spending big and going buck-for-buck against any side to land their priority signings.

Arsenal and Manchester United are locked in a battle for the Top 4 spot in the league. Arsenal are at 5th place while Manchester United are only one point ahead of the gunners and are at the 3rd place.
