According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United will wait until deadline day to complete the signing of Southampton defender Jose Fonte.
The 32-year old is speculated to leave Southampton in favour of Manchester United as new manager Jose Mourinho is keen to add an experienced central defender to his roster before the end of current transfer window.
Arsenal also have shown their interest in signing the Portuguese defender who had played a major part in Portugal’s title-winning triumph in Euro 2016. However, the Gunners have reportedly pulled off their interest as they are convinced that the defender would be joining Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho have already brought in world class signings this summer adding quality players in all the weak areas in his squad and the manager would add Fonte to make his defence stronger after signing Eric Bailly who have impressed in his recent outings for Manchester United.
Fonte has spoken high about Manchester United earlier amid Red Devils’ interest as he is keen on a move to Old Trafford. He said: “If the interest is there, it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United.
“But I have a contract with Southampton, and I’m just focused on my work, to make a great season. I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that it makes me happy to be associated with it. But to be Manchester United’s player is a big difference.”
