According to reports in Portugal, Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon have opened talks over a potential deal for striker Joel Campbell.
Portuguese media outlet O Jogo claim that the Costa Rica international is a long-term target for Sporting Lisbon as the club could finally make a move this summer. The Portuguese giants gave reportedly enquired about the player’s availability for transfer this summer.
Sporting boss Jorge Jesus is a big admirer of Campbell as he tried to sign Campbell during his time at Benfica but has failed.
The 24-year old have moved to Emirates back in 2011 from Saprissa. He has failed to make an impact over the last few years as he was sent on loan on multiple occasions. However, Campbell has made a breakthrough into the side last season as he managed 40 appearances for the Gunners but have scored a mere 4 goals over the course of the season.
The emergence of Iwobi has impacted the player’s chances during the latter stages of the season as he was restricted to bench most of the time. He was also not present in the squad in Arsenal’s 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in the season opener.
However, the injury to Iwobi could now open the chances for Campbell as he might be given one more opportunity before a final decision is made on his future.
