Jose Mourinho was in an aggressive mood when he came out to speak to the media ahead Chelsea’s next league game against Southampton. Mourinho was rather unkind of Sky Sports’ pundits Jamie Carragher and Graham Souness who have been critical of Mourinho’s team over the few weeks.
Mourinho on Premier League campaign and Champions League exit:
Jose Mourinho sounded upbeat and unfazed after Chelsea’s defeat to PSG in Champions League round of 16 clash. Mourinho claimed that his side will win the league and asked the reporters and the media to cut down on their pessimism.
“I had a meeting with the players. [after Wednesday’s game]. Everybody spoke; we were discussing, it was very interactive.
“We have 11 games left. We want to be champions, of course to win the Premier League but also to be top seed next year.”
“I like my players and I trust my players. We win together and we lose together.”
“Our situation is good, it’s better than everyone else’s! Everyone else would love to be in our position. Yesterday we closed the Champions League chapter.”
Mourinho on fickle nature of media:
Jose ripped in to the media claiming they tend to move with the wind. One week they claim, Chelsea can win everything and the moment they suffer a defeat they start questioning their ability to hold to the 8 point lead at the top.
“Chelsea are top of the league since day one. Chelsea are not playing now at the same level we were playing for many months, but for many months we played better than anyone.
“You (the media) go with the wind. In that moment the wind was in one direction where you were all saying Chelsea were a candidate to win the Champions League.
“You were saying Chelsea had conditions to win every competition.
“We cannot play fantastic all season. We had our lowest point in terms of performance in a moment where we couldn’t have it.
“The people that lost, who were out of the Champions League last Wednesday, are the same people who have been top of the Premier League since day one, the same people who won the Capital One Cup, are the same people who are going to win the Premier League.”
Mourinho dishing it out to Jamie Carragher and Graham Souness:
Jose was enraged with how Sky has treated his side’s exit from the Champions League. He had the perfect reply waiting for Jamie Carragher and Graham Souness. These two were critical of how Chelsea players surrounded the ref when Ibra was shown the red card.
“You know, the world is a bit strange, maybe because of diet and the quality of the products we are eating, because memories are getting shorter. When Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness speak about it, it’s because they’re having a problem.
“I’m not like people want me to be, the way people sometimes like to describe me. Jamie stopped playing a couple of years ago and in two years he forgot everything he did on the pitch.
“Mr Souness also forgot but he stopped playing quite a long time [ago], and he also forgets that a couple of years after he left Benfica I coached there. I know a lot about him.
“I learned so much about him but also a certain kind of education, not just in football but also in life. So I prefer to laugh and say that envy is the biggest tribute that the shadows give to the man.
Mourinho on team news and injuries:
Personally, the best response I found was the way Mourinho handled the question surrounding the injury concerns over his side. Chelsea boss confirmed that his physio told that there will be growing concerns over the players’ fitness as they are sad but Mourinho denied those suggestions and cleared to the media that no player other than John Obi Mikel is injured ahead of the game against Southampton.
