Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is on the verge of joining Italian giants Roma as his current club Barcelona have given him permission to have a medical with Giallorossi.

The 30-year old have joined Barcelona from Arsenal in a £15m deal in 2014 but had a very disappointed spell with the Catalan club as he was restricted to only 11 appearances over the last two seasons.

Vermaelen is considered surplus to the club’s requirements with the arrivals of Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne and manager Luis Enrique is keen to offload the player this summer.

FC Barcelona has confirmed the medical on Twitter by saying: “With the club’s permission, Thomas Vermaelen has travelled to Rome to undergo a medical with AS Roma.”

The Belgian international has drawn interest from Arsenal as the Gunners were keen to sign an experienced central defender after the injury of Per Mertesacker who was ruled out for the rest of the year due to an injury.

The player is expected to undergo the medical tomorrow at Villa Stuart after which the deal will be announced officially. The Italian giants have reportedly signed the defender for a season-long deal.

The fee is believed to be around €2m for the season-long loan, with the option to make it permanent for €10m.

Vermaelen still has three years left on his Barcelona’s contract but he is keen to have a first team football as he is all set to put an end to his miserable spell at Camp Nou.
