Portugal international Joao Mario has joined Italian club Inter Milan from Sporting CP in a €45 million deal, the club has confirmed.

The 23-year old had undergone a medical at Milan on Friday and a deal was finalized for the move. He is one of the highly-rated players this summer as he had won Euro championships with Portugal earlier in the summer.

Inter Milan were initially keen on €10m loan plus a €35m obligation to buy in 2017 but with Sporting not interested in the offer, the Italians have finalized €45 million deal.

Sporting released a statement on Saturday that said: “We have reached an agreement with Inter Milan for the transfer of the player Joao Mario for €45m, of which €5m is dictated by objectives.

“The club wishes Joao Mario happiness on a personal and professional level.”

Mario is one of the top targets for both Liverpool and Chelsea as both clubs have expressed their interest in signing him before Inter Milan entered the race. The Reds have also launched a massive €40 million which was rejected by Sporting CP, earlier reports suggested.

Inter Milan who were looking at a range of options to make sure that they are back into the Serie A title race, have made Mario as their top transfer target. With the club taken over by Chinese owners, Inter have plenty of money to spend in the current transfer window as they look to get back to old winning ways this season.

New manager Frank de Boer who replaced Roberto Mancini earlier this summer is very active in the transfer activity as he had already finalized move for Gabriel Barbosa earlier this week. The signing of Mario will bolster Inter Milan’s midfield as they look to get back to CHampions League next season.
