Cristiano Ronaldo leads race for European Golden Shoe

Madrid, March 7 (IANS) Spanish football giants Real Madrid’s Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo is leading the race for the European Golden Shoe with 27 goals.

The award is presented each season to the leading goalscorer in league matches from the top division of every European national league, reports Efe.

Ronaldo increased his credit after the four goals he scored against Celta Vigo on Saturday during a La Liga game that Madrid won 7-1.

Following closely are Italian club Napoli’s Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain, Spanish side Barcelona’s Luis Suarez and Jonas Goncalves from Portugal’s Benfica, with 26 goals each.

Fifth place is occupied by German giants Bayern Munich’s Polish forward and the Bundesliga top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski (23), followed by Borussia Dortmund’s Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (22).

Barcelona’s Argentine star Lionel Messi holds the seventh place with 21 goals.
