Manchester United reportedly made an offer for Barcelona’s Abel Ruiz earlier this summer.

Spanish publication Sport claim the Red Devils submitted a bid for the 16-year-old striker during the transfer but their advances were rejected.

United had been trying to bring him to Old Trafford but he snubbed a move to pen a new three-year deal with the Catalan giants instead.

The youngster had also been linked with a move to Arsenal and Chelsea in the past.

The Gunners reportedly attempted to sign him in January, while the Blues also held talks with his family.

Abel Ruiz is a talented young man who earlier this year made his debut for the Spain U16 side. Since joining from Valencia, he has been one of the most talked about strikers in the Catalans.

But despite United missing out on Ruiz, who is said to be one of the brightest talents within Barca’s youth academy, the Red Devils still had a successful summer transfer window.

Jose Mourinho managed to bring in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba.

The Portuguese is believed to be still keen on bringing in another defender with Jose Fonte top of his wishlist.

Jose Mourinho, understandably enough, wanted to assertively address an issue before it actually becomes an issue.

Because, after Manchester United continued their fine start to the season by beating Southampton 2-0, the Portuguese was asked about those who have – well – not actually been starting.

At this moment, it’s also impossible not to feel that almost every Mourinho decision represents a sub-plot all of its own.

Some of that may unfairly be down to the manager’s past and all the baggage he is perceived to carry, but there has still been considerable intrigue to all of his line-ups so far. All have thrown up questions.
