Louis van Gaal has confirmed the reports that Antonio Valencia picked up a foot injury during the Manchester derby on Sunday.

The Ecuadorian right-back sustained a knock in the half-time but continued playing on until van Gaal being replaced him with Matteo Darmian in the 81st minute.

Valencia is now said to be major doubt in the Capital One Cup clash against Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

“He had a kick on his foot in the first half and then I let Darmian warm up on the touchline,” Van Gaal confirmed.

“But then he played further. However in the end, he could not continue.”

Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville praised Valencia for keeping the Manchester City wingers in control throughout the match, “Both sets of centre-halves were fantastic, with Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo the same against Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling.”
