Italian website Mediaset claim that Manchester United are just a step away from signing Dynamo Kyiv defender Aleksandar Dragovic. Dragovic is certainly a good player but not necessarily the signing United need.
Manchester United lack creativity in the midfield and are currently finding it extremely difficult to score goals but their back line has been excellent and so far United have kept the most clean sheets in this season of the Premier League. So, the signing of Dragovic is certainly not going to excite the United fans too much. Even manager Louis Van Gaal admitted that he gets “bored” occasionally while watching his team play and this report from Mediaset is a little hard to digest.
The fee for the Austrian is quoted at 21 million euros and I honestly can’t see United shell out such a sizeable chunk on a player they probably don’t even need. United’s back four on a few occasions has included teenagers and inexperienced players and maybe United want to bring in Dragovic to add depth to their defence.
In their last Premier League outing, United conceded 3 goals against Newcastle and that might have made Van Gaal feel that he needs to bolster his backline and perhaps that is the only plausible reason why Van Gaal is eyeing Dragovic. However, Louis Van Gaal last week admitted that United are looking for a “right winger” and if United do make a signing in this window it should be that of an attacking player. United have been linked with Lazio’s Felipe Anderson recently.
Leicester were also interested in signing Dragovic but he is believed to have rebuffed their advances. Dragovic joined Dynamo Kiev on a five-year contract at the beginning of the 2013-14 season for 9 million euros. Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with the Austrian international in the past.
