Manchester United are set to sign Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as they are currently leading the race ahead of their cross-city rivals Manchester City, according to reports.
The Red Devils could be without their No.1 David de Gea as the shot stopper is tipped to make a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in the summer. The Spaniard has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has played a key role in Manchester United’s success in the recent seasons.
However, his desire to return to Spain and play under Zinedine Zidane could very well see Manchester United make a move for Kasper Schmeichel, who has emerged as potential replacement for de Gea.
But the club are not the only one who are interested in the Danish goalkeeper as their rivals Manchester City are also keen to sign the 29-year old. Pep Guardiola is not keen to go into the upcoming season with Claudio Bravo as his No.1 as the Chilean has succumbed to the pressure of Premier League and English media in his debut season.
According to Sky Sports, both the clubs are set to fight against each other to sign Schmeichel who has developed into one of the finest goalkeepers in the Premier League as he played a crucial role in helping Leicester City to their first ever league title last year.
The 30-year old has close relations with both the clubs as he is the son Manchester United’s greatest goalkeeper Peter Schemichel but has also spent a considerable amount of time in Manchester City’s academy before leaving for Notts County.
He then moved to Leicester City in 2011 and has helped Foxes clinch the unthinkable Premier League glory in 2016. He has since become one of the best goalkeepers in the league and reports suggest that the Danish international has recently parted way with his Triple S Management, to join Italian agent Luca Bascherini.
The Italian agent shares close connections with Old Trafford management and should de Gea move Manchester United will be in pole position to land Schmeichel Jr. next season.
