This weekend of Premier League sees Manchester United welcome West Ham United at home, in an important clash for van Gaal. The Red Devils will definitely look to return to winning the alley after the frustrating 1-1 draw with Leicester City last weekend at The King Power Stadium.
Dutch manager Louis van Gaal has been yet again handed selection blows at the last moment. Following Marcos Rojo’s dislocated shoulder in a training mid-week, Manchester United were hit hard by the news of skipper Rooney suffering a ‘nasty’ ankle injury, that suggests the out of form striker could miss today’s match and also the crucial Champions League encounter against Wolfsburg in midweek. Not only Marcos Rojo and Wayne Rooney sits out, Phil Jones and Ander Herrera will also miss The Hammers’ game. So, with several first-team players are out with injury, who might United manager select in his starting lineup?
Here is the predicted lineup for Manchester United against West Ham United.
David de Gea as usual will be protecting the United goal bar. The Spanish shot-stopper is in good form since his first appearance of the season against Liverpool after sitting out opening six games.
United used a 3-5-2 formation against Watford and Leicester City earlier, but the frustrating attacking performance from Matteo Darmian might force van Gaal to make a change in formation as options are so limited right now. A return to four in the defence means Marcos Rojo’s absence would not be missed that much.
Daley Blind possibly will shift into a more natural left defensive role. On the right it would be returning from injury Ashley Young. Paddy Mcnair started against The Foxes in the left centre-back positions. With Jones out with injury, Van Gaal’s defensive options are very limited. That means apart from the makeshift Blind, McNair should be called upon for this match, partnering the rock solid Chris Smallingin the heart of the defence.
In the deep lying midfield role, Morgan Schneiderlin may partner with Bastian Schweinsteiger, who will likely be substituted around the hour mark to keep the German fresh for the most important match against Wolfsburg in the Champions League.
With Rooney and Herrera out injured, the midfield contains a number of questions. Whoever hovers in the middle of the pitch, van Gaal seems to be choosing a three man attacking midfield, with Juan Mata on the right.
The question is who will be in the other two attacking positions. Memphis Depay could have been returned to the lone striker role following his success against Watford few weeks back but as Anthony Martial is fully fit, the French striker will likely start up front instead. That means Depay could be shifted to the left flank while an unexpected call up waits for Fellaini in the centre.
With captain Rooney missing the match due to an ankle injury, fit again Anthony Martial will lead the attack from the top as all eyes will be upon him to give United the much needed goals.
