Real Madrid and Argentina mid-fielder Angel di Maria tops the transfer target list of Manchester United’s manager-in-waiting Louis van Gaal.

Red devils are, moreover, eyeing Borrusia Dortmund defender Matts Hummels and believe they can land both players for around £75m, as per report in Guardian. United are confident to fund these deals by the selling current lot of players like Marouane Fellaini, Nani, Ashley Young and Shinji Kagawa, who Van Gaal considers surplus to the requirement.

Van Gaal, who has guided Netherlands into semi-final of world cup will now face an Argentina team sans María who is ruled out due to injury.

The 62-year-old former Ajax and Bayern Munich manager is known to play 4-3-3 formation and although he is not rigid vis-à-vis formation. The case in point being the World Cup where Van Gaal has lined up often in a 5-3-2 formation, a style in which, Van Gaal believes Di María excels and would enhance his team.

Di María, who had a wonderful last season at Real Madrid, so much so that he named man of the match in Real Madrid’s Champions League final win over arch-rivals Atlético Madrid.

United it os understood would bid in the region around £40m, which would make Madrid giants sit up and take notice, especially when there are reports in Spanish media of Real’s interest in Monaco’s James Rodríguez, who had a stellar World Cup in Brazil scoring six goals in 5 matches for Colombia, and, as of now, is World Cup’s top scorer.

Even last January Di Maria came close to a Bernabéu exit, if one believes his agent Eugenio López, who claimed a presidential issue forced Argentine star to think about a move away from Madrid. The story gets credence as his wife also posted an Instagram message in November: “And you want to sell him?”
