Manchester United versus Chelsea – this game brings in a picture of a massive game. More like a game which could be termed as the clash of the titans. The title would suit aptly if it was used a season earlier, but now it only sounds absurd. The reason behind this is how the two teams have fallen down massively. Manchester United has been playing boring, sloppy football. Just grinding results or falling prey to the opponents and settling for a 0-0 draw or now-a-days losing. Whereas for Chelsea- the Blues have had the worst campaign this season as they nearly entered the relegation zone. Jose Mourinho was sacked some days ago and Guus Hiddink has taken over. The team however has looked better after Jose’s exit. But the game isn’t going to be a high scoring one as both the teams mainly play defensive football these days. Ahead of the clash we discuss 5 key battles between the two.
1) Anthony Martial vs Kurt Zouma
Martial has scored just 4 goals in 12 fixtures, he started off well in the league but doesn’t do justice to his £36m price tag, anymore. Martial possesses brilliant passing skills and he will be the man of the moment in the game. As for Kurt Zouma, he will have a tough time marking Martial as the lad is quick and finishes brilliantly. Martial’s defending is poor and maybe Zouma could take advantage of his weaknesses. Reports claim that there are chances of Zouma being benched however there has been no confirmation on the same.
2) Juan Mata vs Cesar Azpilicueta
Mata hasn’t been in good form lately and struggled in the game against Stoke City, too. Azpilicueta loves holding onto the ball and often tackles well. Mata could possibly face obstacles with Azpilicueta blocking him from scoring the goals. Mata is weak at tackling the ball where Azpi can easily nutmeg him. Mata doesn’t defend well either and this will be a bonus for the Chelsea defender.
3) Memphis Depay vs Branislav Ivanovic
Memphis has proven to be a failed aspect at Old Trafford as the Dutchman hasn’t lived upto the expectations of the fans. His performance was shambolic against Stoke City as he stood out being the worst player in the game. Memphis does not hold onto the ball well and Ivanovic can definitely win over Memphis. Also, Ivanovic’s experience of the league will help him overpower Memphis and eventually subtle his impact in Man United’s attack.
4) Cesc Fabregas vs Bastian Schweinsteiger
The German maestro Schweinsteiger will return to United’s squad for the game against Chelsea after the completion of his 3 game ban. Bastian has been decent this season although he hasn’t been able to net enough goals. Bastian’s passing is top notch and long shots are his strengths. Fabregas will have a hard time facing Bastian as Fabregas himself hasn’t been any good this season. It’s going to be a true test of skills for Cesc.
5) Willian da Silva vs Daley Blind
This would be an easy battle for Willian as Blind has been poorly performing lately. Willian has been a key player for the Blues whereas Blind’s existence hasn’t fruited any benefits for the team, lately. Willian is likely to go past Blind and score a few.
