A big summer is in store for the Premier League champions of last season who have found results hard to come by this season.
After the Mourinho sacking, Guus Hiddink has done more than a decent job at the club but he was only appointed on an interim basis and will most probably give way to Italian national coach Antonio Fonte at the end of this season.
This will send the club in transition this summer and a number of players are tipped off to be moving away from the club with the lack of Champions League football next season.
Star Belgian play-maker Eden Hazard has been at the top of the list of players set to leave Stamford Bridge according to rumors and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson had his say on the player’s future at the club.
The 25-year old was involved in a controversial shirt swap with PSG’s Angel di Maria and Merson felt that it was disrespectful of the Belgian to have done it on the field especially as he is linked with a move to the French outfit at the end of the season.
“It’s only a couple of weeks ago he said it would be hard to turn down a move to Paris St-Germain,” the former Arsenal player added.
The manager was asked about this incident after the game and the Dutchman said that he will have a talk with the Belgian later that day. Merson added that though it is accepted outside England as Hiddink pointed out, he went on to say that the Premier League just does not accept it.
“Then he goes and swaps shirts with one of their players at half time! I know Guus Hiddink said it’s more accepted abroad. But he’s playing here and we don’t do it,” Merson added.
The PFA player of the season for the last campaign has had a forgettable season this time around where he has not been to score even a single Premier League goal so far this season.
Though injuries have not helped his cause, Merson urged the Stamford Bridge outfit to get rid of the player and cut their losses when his value is high in the market.
He went on to say that Hazard was a ‘one season wonder’ and that he deserves no place in the Chelsea side.
“He has disrespected Chelsea and their fans and doesn’t look like a player who wants to be there so they should wash their hands of him,” Merson added.
Hazard was simply un-playable in the previous season and was amongst the top dribblers in world football. But just 4 months later, he has looked a shadow of his previous self and has had no impact for Chelsea this season.
“He had one great season but this campaign he’s been atrocious and that’s not good enough. Is he a one-season wonder?”
It is not easy to understand that drastic fall in form for the player who seemed to be in an elite list of top class footballers just last season. The 25-year old does not look anywhere close to a player with his potential as shown in the last season and it is increasingly looking like he has no future at Chelsea.
The Sky Sports pundit also pointed out that the drastic change in form is the clue that he is not mentally fit for the Premier League.
“Last season he was an 8/10 every game. Now he’s a 5/10 most of the time. I’ve never seen a player decline so badly,” Merson said.
All of Hazards goals this season have come in the FA Cup and it is the only real chance of silverware for the London franchise this season.
If the Belgian can help his team to the trophy this season, he might still be in with a chance to play for the club next season, but with clubs like Real Madrid and PSG calling, it is hard to see him wear the blue of Chelsea at the start of the next season.
Do you think Chelsea should hold on to Hazard this summer?
