Brendan Rodgers led Liverpool back to Champions League and falling just two points short of the Premier League title. After an impressive last season, he revealed he wants to sign 5-6 players as he prepares to take the club back to Champions League football. Rodgers signed a new, long-term contract at Liverpool Football Club, which will keep him at the club till 2018. He revealed that the club is working hard to bring the right players and the signings are “complex”.
Rodgers:”That’s the idea. Obviously it’s the off-season and we have the World Cup and other various things going on. People need to refresh and have a break because we have a long season ahead next season.
“We’re still working on signings, the staff behind the scenes, myself, the recruitment team, Ian Ayre – we’re all working hard still in terms of looking to get players in. Of course, at the club, where we are now, the signings are complex; they are not all simple signings. But we need to strengthen up the squad and that’s something that we’re working hard to do over the next number of weeks.”
We take a look at the top 5 players linked to Liverpool in the last few weeks.
Adam Lallana is Anfield bound, according to reports in England. Lallana, 25, has emerged as a top target for Brendan Rodgers, and is looking to bring the playmaker to Anfield before the start of the World Cup this summer. Lallana was voted the Saints’ Player of the Season, has scored nine goals in 37 premier League games this season, he was included in the World Cup squad by Roy Hodgson and was recently included in the PFA team of the season. Lallana would be a perfect fit for Rodgers and will add goals to the midfield. Liverpool are hoping to sign the Saints skipper for £20 m.
Rodgers will be hoping to sign a quality defensive midfielder to replace out of favor Lucas Leiva. Gerrard has played as a holding midfielder for Liverpool last season and Rodgers has identified youngster Emre Can as a long term repalcement of his skipper. The German youngster is dubbed as ‘The new Michael Ballack’, is known for his versatility and has made a great impression this season. He can also play at left back, centre midfield and attacking midfield and played an important role of Leverkusen this season. Liverpool are closing in on a £12 million deal for the former Bayern Munich midfielder.
Liverpool conceded 50 goals last season more than any other side in the top 5 of the Premier League and Rodgers will surely be looking to strengthen his defence. Moreno, 21, is on Liverpool’s radar after an impressive season with Sevilla. The Spain international was part of Sevilla’s Europa League winning side. Rodgers wants Moreno to replace Aly Cissokho, after deciding not to sign him permanently. Moreno has a release clause of £25m and it is highly unlikely Sevilla will accept anything less after Napoli had an offer of €14.5 million rejected in January.
Another Saints player Liverpool will be hoping to sign to strengthen their defence is Dejan Lovren. He signed for Southampton from Lyon for £8.5 million last summer. Liverpool wanted to sign the Croatian international last summer, but they went for Mamadou Sakho instead and if reports are to be believed they want him again this summer to replace club’s vice captain Daniel Agger who is expected to leave Anfield.
Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp revealed the forward buy-out clause close to £8m. The French international has scored 14 times in 26 appearances for Newcastle United this season. His future remains unclear, as he is set to leave Queens Park Rangers, with both Arsenal and Liverpool interested. Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have scored goals regularly for Liverpool last season, and Liverpool will be hoping to sign Remy as they build a squad that can compete in the Premier League as well as the Champions League.
