The UEFA Player of the Year 2014/15 has been revealed for both men and women. Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the nominees this year for the trophy.

German international women’s footballer Celia Sasic bagged the Best Women’s Player in Europe award. The Striker plas for Frankfurt and has represented her national team for 111 matches.

Lionel Messi won the UEFA Player of the Year as expected defeating team mate Luis Suarez and arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 28-year-old Argentine maestro broke Telmo Zarra’s record for La Liga goals last season and ended the year with 58 goals in all competitions. Lionel Messi was also thejoint-top scorer in the UEFA Champions League alongside club colleague Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo scoring ten goals in the competition.

Messi, Ronaldo and Suárez had gained the most points from a second poll of the journalists representing each of UEFA’s member associations, the three having initially been part of aten-strong list revealed in mid-July that was the result of a first round of voting by the same reporters.

This is the second time in his career that Lionel Messi won the Best Player in Europe award. The first time was in 2011.

After the recieving the prestigious award, Lionel Messi sounded pretty overwhelmed and thanked his team mates for his glory. The UEFA official website quoted the Argentine: “We’re a unified squad who worked very hard to achieve the goals we did. I’m very happy and I would like to thank my team-mates – without them I wouldn’t have achieved this.”

FC Barcelona had won the treble last season and this time tehy started their campaign by winning the European Super Cup defeating Sevilla and completed the quadruple.

Unfortunately they went down pretty badly against Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup tie and thus, failed to complete the ‘sextuple honour’.
