Barcelona won the La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League last season thanks to their top class trio up front.

Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr and Luis Suarez have done some incredible things for Barcelona since the Uruguayan moved to Spain from England.

However it was now revealed that the ex-Liverpool hitman was not the first choice player for the Catalan giants.

Andoni Zubizarreta who was sacked by the Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu in January last year from his post as a head of the transfer committee said that Manchester City and Argentine striker Sergio Aguero was the first choice striker and that that 75 million rated Suarez was not on top of the wish list.

‘We had some options. The first was not Suarez. He knows it. In winter we considered the signing of Aguero. That did not work out,’ Zubizarreta told Marca, the Spanish newspaper.

‘In this situation, there was no doubt: Luis Suarez was our only goal.’

Suarez’s start at Barcelona was hampered by the four-month suspension he received as a result of his actions at the World Cup in Brazil when he bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini while playing for Uruguay.

His suspension, though, was exactly the reason why Zubizarreta feels he ended up with the Catalan club.

‘During the negotiation process the incident with Chiellini occurred,’ he added.

‘The issue created a seed of doubt for other clubs who wanted him. They questioned his character. I thought it was the perfect time to accelerate the process of signing him.

‘I liked everything about him: he was not static, knew his way around the outside of the box and gave us a profile which we did not have.’

Neither the Uruguayan nor the Barcelona fans will be complaining on missing out on Aguero as Suarez has taken his game to the next level matching the heights of Messi and Neymar in La Liga.
