Most of the credit for the team’s achievement in football is taken by attacking players with all the glitz and glamor part of the game revolving around the concept of scoring goals, sometimes leaving the defender’s efforts unappreciated.
So in order to highlight the importance and the contributions of defenders in the game, here is a list of the top-5 defenders of 2014 who have contributed their blood and sweat to their teams and played a major role in clubs success in the year 2014.
Here is Sportzwiki’s own list of the Top-5 defenders of 2014 –
Ramos as we know is a true Madridista who has been with the Los Blancos in their good as well as bad time, but this year was very special him as he played a very key role in their UEFA Champions League ‘La Decima’ and Copa Del Rey triumph.
His equalizer versus Atletico Madrid in the dying minutes of the UCL final highlighted his year. His performance in almost every game for Real Madrid was sensational both at the back as well as in scoring important goals which truly earns him a place in the top-5 defender of 2014.
Is there any right-back on this planet who is better than Philipp Lahm at the moment? The answer might very well be a negative.
Germany and Bayern Munich captain had a brilliant year where he won the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal with Bayern and won the FIFA world cup with Germany. Lahm is well known for his flawless defending and pin-point crossing. He is a creative defender who also has the capability to create chances for his forwards from right back position. As per the statisticians, in the year 2014, Lahm is yet to commit a single defensive error.
One of the most calm and composed defenders of this generation and arguably the best in Premier League last season. Gary Cahill had an amazing season at Chelsea despite closing the year without any silverware.
Unlike other defenders Gary plays simple football and does exactly he is told to do and hardly ever fails to fulfill the expectations of his manager. He barely puts a foot wrong as he has made only 4 defensive errors in last 46 Premier League games despite playing as a back foot defender. He surely deserves to make the list of the Top-5 defenders of 2014.
Diego Godin was one of the most underrated defenders last year. He was the heart of Atletico Madrid’s defense which won the La Liga and went till the finals of the Champions League with the least number of goals conceded. Godin is the type of defender who never takes his eye off the ball and defends like it’s a matter of life and death. His average defensive contribution per game is 10 which is a mesmerizing figure in itself earning him a place in the Top-5 defenders of 2014.
Just like all the other defenders mentioned above Kompany had a brilliant season too. The Manchester City and Belgium skipper won the Premier League and Capital One Cup titles with Manchester City and guided Belgian Red Devils till the World Cup quarter-finals.
For his brilliant performance throughout the year he was named in the PFA squad of the year alongside Gary Cahill. He is arguably one of the best captains in football and a tough defender who is a nightmare for the attackers and completes the list of the top-5 defenders of 2014
