Stats That Show How Much Argentina Depend On Messi

Messi’s goal helped Argentina beat Chile to go third in the World Cup qualifying group.

The Barcelona superstar is showing how big an effect he has on Argentina’s results. His goal against Chile from last season helped Edgardo Bauza’s side to victory in their World Cup 2018 qualifier. Brazil are top of the group with 30 points, while Uruguay are second on 23 and Argentina third on 22.

The stats with and without Messi show just how much they have to thank him for. During the qualifying phase Messi has played six games, with five wins and one defeat. 15 points from 18. Related image

Without him they have just 7 points from 21. One win, four draws and two defeats. Numbers don’t lie – if Argentina qualify for the World Cup it will be because of Messi’s impact.

Meanwhile, the tit-for-tat football saga between Leo Messi and Claudio Bravo took another dramatic twist on Thursday night as Argentina inched into the World Cup qualifying positions by squeezing past Chile 1-0.

It was the Barcelona genius who thrashed home the high-tension winner as his former Camp Nou team-mate danced back and forward along the goal line to try and distract him.

The last time the two men went eye-to-eye at eleven meters distance it became one of the worst moments in Messi’s life.

He’d already lost one Copa America Final on penalties to Chile in summer 2015 (just a year after losing the World Cup final) when he stepped up to the spot after 120 minutes in the searing heat of New York last summer.Image result for messi against chile 1-0

Holders Chile had held on for 0-0 despite playing with ten men before half an hour had passed – and Juve’s Arturo Vidal fluffed the first spot kick.

Destiny beckoned for Messi who carries the weight of his inability to deliver another major international tournament since the Olympic gold in 2008 like a double-decker bus on his shoulders.

Bravo danced around in a pale Jerzy Dudek imitation but it was sufficient to ruin Messi’s concentration and the player who can find the top corner of the net from thirty meters took a few New Jersey seagulls out of commission forever by smashing his penalty high over Bravo’s crossbar.
