So it finally is happening, football fans from all around the world woke up today with the news that Steven Gerrard might be moving away from the club that he has been at for 17 years, Liverpool. While there is a press conference to be called soon, it is all but a surety that Gerrard will announce his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season as his contract ends and that he may move to a new club.

The decision seems to be one for family and not monetary reasons as Gerrard would move to the MLS and would want to take up another culture in the US. Gerrard was offered a contract by Liverpool in November but reduced playing time would have been on his mind, even though Rodgers did want to keep the Legend at Liverpool even post his playing career with a coaching role but it seems that Gerrard wants to prolong his career and moving to the MLS like Thierry Henry, David Villa or David Beckham might be the best decision for him, at least he didn’t go and join a rival like Chelsea or Manchester City, keeping that in mind, here are the top 5 Steven Gerrard moments.

UEFA Cup final 2001

The precursor to Gerrard’s scoring in finals; he is the only person to have scored in a UEFA Champions League final, UEFA Cup final, League cup final and FA Cup final till date. Gerrard was a young upstart and had just made his position in the Liverpool XI. He scored the 2nd goal for Liverpool in this helter skelter game which Liverpool won 5-4 to win the UEFA Cup against Deportivo Alaves.

This was the same season when Liverpool won 5 trophies in the year, the perfect start to Gerrard’s long career at Liverpool.

Hat Trick against Everton: 2012

There is probably nothing better than scoring against your rivals, there is nothing better than scoring against your city rivals as well. Liverpool fans might consider their rivalry with Manchester United huge but the rivalry with Everton is strong as well. Gerrard was at the forefront during the second reign of Kenny Dalglish and he scored a memorable hat trick against Liverpool’s long term rivals, something that he will enjoy forever.

UEFA Champions League: Olympiakos

I don’t have to explain what this goal did for Liverpool but just to refresh the memory, Liverpool needed to score 3 goals against Olympiakos and were 2-1 up, they needed one more to qualify to the next round and Gerrard ended up scoring what could be the greatest UEFA Champions League goal of his career.

That rocket propelled Liverpool and took them all the way to the finals, where Gerrard still had a say. We could watch this forever.

FA Cup Final 2006

Captain Fantastic was at it again against West Ham United in the 2006 FA Cup final. He scored once to level the game but Liverpool were trailing 3-2 with just seconds left in the game and then he decided to use that famous right book to take the game into extra time.

Liverpool won the FA Cup on penalties but by golly had it not been for that thunder-bursting foot of Gerrard’s they would have lost out on this final as well.

UEFA Champions League final 2005

Steven Gerrard never won a premier league medal but he took what is considered one of the weakest Liverpool teams to the UEFA Champions League final against the best European side in years, AC Milan, who had Kaka, Seedorf, Cafu, Shevchenko, Crespo, Dida, Nesta, Maldini and Gattuso to name a few.

Trailing at half time 3-0 and looking utterly out of depth, Gerrard scored one goal and then the 6 minutes of madness began, the Miracle of Istanbul was complete in penalties as Liverpool won their 5th Champions League title, more than any other English club, Gerrard was written into Liverpool folklore and will always be considered as one of the greatest Liverpool player’s ever, if not one of the greatest player’s ever.
