According to reports, Liverpool target Dejan Lovren is believed to have handed in an official transfer request.

Neil Ashton of Daily mail writes, Dejan Lovren wants to play Champions League football next season and wants to switch clubs this summer.

  • Sportsmail Online can reveal that the central defender wrote an email to executive director Les Reed and chairman Ralph Krueger on May 30 with notice of his desire to leave St Mary’s this summer.
  • In the email, the defender outlined his ambition to play Champions League football next season and wants to move this summer.

Southampton are yet to accept Lovren’s transfer request and the new manager is expected to take a decision. Recently, the Croatian international admitted he is happy at St. Mary’s, but it now appears the changes to management have also affected his decision.

Dejan Lovren: “I follow the media and I saw that Liverpool is allegedly interested in me. But that is all that I know so far.

“I feel great at Southampton and my contract is valid for the next three years.

“So the only thing I can say right now is that the club is the one who decides.”

Liverpool conceded 50 goals last season more than any other side in the top 5 of the Premier League and Rodgers will surely be looking to strengthen his defence. Rodgers has identified Lovren as his top defensive target. He signed for Southampton from Lyon for £7 million last summer. Liverpool wanted to sign the Croatian international last summer, but they went for Mamadou Sakho instead and if reports are to be believed they want him again this summer to replace club’s vice captain Daniel Agger who is expected to leave Anfield.

Lovren is expected to start for Croatia when they kick off the World Cup tomorrow against Brazil and any decision will be taken only after the World Cup.
