Champions of England, Chelsea hosted Portuguese giants FC Porto at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday in a must-win game to ensure qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Blues were struggling for form in recent weeks and there has been on consistency in their play at all this season. However, in order to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition, a powerful performance was needed against a Porto side, who had already beaten the west London side in the reverse fixture. The hosts started the game positively and manager Jose Mourinho would have been delighted when Marcano was unfortunate to score an own goal in the 12th minute.
Both sides pushed hard for more goals, but there were none in the first half and they went into the break at 1-0, with the Portuguese manager’s side leading at the break.
The second period started well for the hosts who scored immediately after the break on the 52nd minute, as Willian hit the target with a powerful shot. There were no more goals added in the match, though both sides had the chance to score more and it ended 2-0.
Mourinho’s side went through to the next round of the Champions League and will hope to go all the way, though it will surely be a tough ask for them.
The Premier League title defence did not work out well for the Londoners and they have been elminiated from the League Cup as well, which could mean that the Chelsea boss might ultimately focus on Europe’s top competition now.
