Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been in touch with Anderlecht wonderkid Youri Tielemans over a transfer to Old Trafford.
The Belgian midfielder is considered one of the biggest talents in European football and has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs in the past.
United now seem to be after him as they continue their summer of big spending, which has seen Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly rock up in Manchester.
Tielemans supposedly got a phone call from Mourinho about becoming the latest Red Devils signing, according to his old team-mate Lukasz Plonowski.
Speaking to Polish site Weszlo, he said: “Youri called me up recently and said: Lukasz, do you know who called me? Mourinho.
“He asked if how I’d take the possibility to move to Manchester United.”
United already have plenty of options in midfield, but may be thinking long-term as Michael Carrick looks likely to be in his final season with the club, while Bastian Schweinsteiger has already been banished to the reserves.
A great strength of Tielemans’ is his versatility and ability to play multiple roles on the pitch. He can be deployed as the primary playmaker further up given his fantastic dribbling skills and passing capabilities.
He can also be paired with a more defensive-minded midfielder deeper on the pitch to control the midfield through his ball retention and vision.
In the case of emergency, he could also fill in as the defensive midfielder himself, though it’s not an ideal use of his skills and he would need much training and game time if this is to be the course of his development.
Ideally, he’ll be turned into a box-to-box midfielder, someone capable of chipping in with defensive work through his positioning and awareness but also someone who’ll serve as the transition point between the separate units on the pitch when shifting into the attack.
