For the first time in its history of more than 100 years, Viswa Bharati University at Shanti Niketan in Birbhum district has decided to construct a sports village along with a sports school. And following its decision, the University top brass has already designed a plan of setting the whole infrastructure on a huge land, approximately 72 acres, outside the main University building. According to initial plans, the University bosses have thought of including six sports disciplines to nurture. Those are Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Athletics, shooting and also cricket. The design has been laid out where an ultra-modern football stadium with a capacity of around 15 thousand people and four modern tartan athletics tracks also around the football ground will be installed. Besides the football stadium, plans have been made to install four to five ultra-modern basketball courts where championships like NBA can even take place in future.

This apart, sports school will also have a scientific indoor training centre for cricket as well as shooting ranges will also be made. All these infrastructures will be assisted with a big hostel where at least 200 players from all disciplines can get accommodation with modern facilities.

The management which has already secured two percent of the total number of admission seats in the University has also informed the Union home ministry has also promised them to send the required financial grant for the construction and maintenance of the sports village and sports school. Director of the physical education and sports section of the University Dr. Manimukut Mitra has revealed that it will reach nearly Rs 25 crores to complete the venture and it might take two more years to build up the sports village and school.

According to the director, it will be the first time in the country where an educational institution has taken the decision to pay importance and explore such a noble venture.
