Chile and Internacional midfield star Charles Aranguiz has opted to join Bayer Leverkusen ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal. Aranguiz was Chile’s star in the recently concluded Copa America and was a target for both Premier League giants.
Internacional had placed a £10million asking fee for the Chilean which had put off both Chelsea and Arsenal. Subsequently, Leicester City had agreed to pay the transfer fee but the player was unwilling to move as he was not convinced coming to Leicester.
Bayer Leverkusen were aware of the growing interest in the player and acted swiftly by agreeing to pay the transfer fee and agreeing a five-year deal with the Chilean. Leverkusen has been looking to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.
Having signed Aranguiz, club’s managing director Michael Schade said: “We’re pleased that our persistence paid off and that Charles Aránguiz has decided to join us,” said Leverkusen’s general manager, Michael Schade, on the Bundesliga club’s website.
“We’ve been focusing our efforts on realising this transfer for a long time now and we were not really helped by the player’s extraordinary performances both in the Copa and for his club.
“That makes it all the more satisfying now to have beaten off international competition for his signature.”
Aranguiz also revealed how his international teammate Arturo Vidal made up his mind on joining Leverkusen as Vidal had previously played for them between 2007 and 2011.
