India under 21 men’s hockey team lost to Belgium 1-3 in the group stage match played at Breda, Holland last night. It was a good performance by the Indian team, but Belgium were the better team on the day.
In the first half both teams played some fast paced hockey but neither were able to score any goals. In the last few minutes of first half the Belgium team earned a penalty corner but was well saved by the Indian goalkeeper.
The second half both teams played some aggressive hockey. Belgium earned a penalty corner in the first few minutes of second half but was again well saved by the Indian goalkeeper.
Tom Degroote gave Belgium 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. Soon after the Indians earned 2 penalty corners in a row and dragflicker Harmanpreet Singh converted the second chance into the goal to equal the score at 1-1 in the 48th minute. In the 55th minute Belgium team earned another penalty corner which was converted by Tanguy Zimmer to give Belgium a 2-1 lead.
Then in the 62nd minute Xavier Deruyttere converted a field goal and gave Belgium a commanding 3-1 lead. The Indians tried to comeback into the match. It was their first loss after beat Germany and NewZeleand. India will play Holland on Wednesday.
In the women’s section India drew with Germany at 4-4. It is a brilliant result for the Indian women’s team.
