Ranchi Rays defeated Punjab Warriors in a penalty shootout 3-2 in Hockey India League final at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium at New Delhi, just a few minutes ago. It was a brilliant performance by both teams as they fought till the last minute.
In the first quarter the only attack was made by Ranchi in 5.03 minutes when the Punjab goalkeeper made a good save. Both teams’ defense performed brilliantly as they did not allow scoring goals on each other or even giving away penalty corners. At the end of first quarter it was 0-0.
The second quarter followed the similar pattern with Ranchi Rays making the positive move in 2.27 minute when Punjab goalkeeper made a good save. In this quarter also both teams’ defense was excellent and did not allow goals or penalty corners. At the end of second quarter it was 0-0.
In the 3rd quarter Punjab made the first positive move in 3.57 minute earning the first penalty corner. It was well saved by a defense and goalkeeper. Ranchi Rays goalkeeper made another excellent save. In 8.19 minutes Kireon Gover converted a field goal to give Punjab 1-0 lead. In 10.37 minutes Ranchi earned a penalty corner. Though Ranchi asked for a review the decision stood as penalty corner. In 11.07 minutes Jackson hit a shot that was well saved by goalkeeper and rebound shot was tapped into the goal by Stanley to level the score at 1-1 for which he earned goal of the match award.
In the fourth quarter Ranchi Rays earned a penalty corner in the first 55 seconds. It was well saved twice by Punjab goalkeeper. In 10.27 minute Jaypee Punjab earned a penalty corner and Cirello converted the corner into a goal to giving Jaypee Punjab a 2-1 lead. In 10.54 a combination of three players resulted in Middleton tapping the ball finally in split of seconds into the goal to level the score at 2-2. In 11.59 Jaypee Punjab earned a penalty corner but could not convert the chance. In 13.29 Jaypee earned another penalty corner. Though Ranchi asked for a review the TV umpire decision stayed as penalty corner and thus Ranchi lost the review. The shot was well saved in dying minute. At the end of match it was 2-2 and went to penalty shootout.
The first penalty shootout was taken by Punjab Orchard and missed. Jackson took the shootout for Ranchi and converted the goal from reverse flick, the second penalty shootout was taken by Cirello and was converted into a goal, from Ranchi the second penalty shootout was taken by Birendra Lakra and was saved by Punjab goalkeeper. Next Dharmvir converted the goal to give Punjab a 2-1 lead. Beale took the next and converted the goal. Sunil hit the next shot but was well saved by Ranchi goalkeeper. The next penalty shoot from Ranchi was by Manpreet , the goal keep r obstructed and hence a penalty stroke was awarded. The penalty stroke was converted in to the goal by Jackson. The fifth shot was taken Hammond that was saved by Ranchi goalkeeper and thus won the match 3-2 on a penalty shootout.
