India started their Sultan Azlan Shah 2016 tournament with a 2-1 win over Japan in their first match at Ipoh few minutes ago. Despite India not converting chances they played good hockey to beat the Japan team.
In the first quarter, the Indian team was looking rusty. Both the teams got chances to score goals but they were not able to convert it. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 0-0.
In the second quarter, Japan got the first penalty corner in the 2nd minute and the penalty corner was converted by drag-flicker of Japan to give them a surprising lead. Then India played some excellent hockey as Ramandeep got a chance but it was well saved by the goalkeeper. In the 10th minute, India got their first penalty corner and Harmanpreet converted the penalty corner into the goal to level the score at 1-1. The Indian forwards put pressure on the Japan players. They continued to attack the Japan defense. At the end of the second quarter, the score was level at 1-1.
In the third quarter, the Indian team played attacking hockey and did not allow Japan players a luxury of possession. The Indian forwards kept on attacking but they were unable to convert the chances into goals. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the scores remained 1-1.
In the fourth quarter, Sardar Singh scored a brilliant goal in the 2nd minute to give India a 2-1 lead. The Indian team continued to attack the Japanese team. They dominated and did not gave Japan a chance in the game. In the 12th minute, India earned 2 back to back penalty corners but they were not able to convert the chance. In the end, India won the match by 2-1.
Their next match in the tournament will be against Australia tomorrow.
