The Battleground PPV will return this year as the third Smackdown-exclusive PPV following Wrestlemania 33. The tradition of this event started back in the year 2013 which means it will be the fifth event in the chronology. The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA will be the host to the PPV, this year.
The main event for the show has already been announced which came as a huge announcement for the WWE Universe, especially for the Indian audience. The Punjabi Prison match will return to the WWE after a hiatus of ten long years. Randy Orton will challenge Jinder Mahal inside the Demonic Structure for the WWE Championship. The probable final fight between these two will go down on July 23rd.
Apart from this one match, we might be going to see two huge matches on the card. As per the reports from Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin will be added to the match card. Plus, Mike Kanellis will make his debut in a match against Sami Zayn with his wife, Maria by his side.
According to the source, WWE wants to protect Nakamura from the main event scene, for now, so that he can be given a big push when the Wrestlemania 34 season picks up. So, he will be involved in some non-title feud for the rest of this year.
The rivalry between Corbin and Nakamura started after the former one attacked the Artist on the ramp, from behind. Later, he also prevented him from winning the Money in the Bank briefcase and captured it, himself. So, this storyline will be carried forward and a PPV match will be sanctioned.
On the other hand, the feud between Mike Kanellis and Sami Zayn has begun after the latter one has interrupted the “Power of Love” celebration on this past week’s Smackdown Live. This was done intentionally so that Mike can make his in-ring debut, finally. Both, Samia and Mike used to perform in the Ring of Honour promotion, at one point and this should turn out to be an interesting feud.
Apart from these matches, the Smackdown tag team match has already been confirmed for the Battleground PPV. The Usos will defend their titles against The New Day in a rematch from Money in the Bank.
