Twitter Reacts As PV Sindhu Settles For A Silver In Badminton World Championship

PV Sindhu’s hopes of becoming the first woman shuttler from India to win the gold at the Badminton World Championships ended on a disappointing note but the Olympic silver medalist has won over millions of hearts with a valiant effort before losing 19-21, 22-20, 20-22 to Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a hard-fought final at Glasgow in Scotland on Sunday (August 27).

Okuhara drew the first blood in the tie by taking the first point while Sindhu bagged two successive points to take 2-1 lead. The Japanese star soon took a 5-3 lead before Sindhu won eight back-to-back points to go into the break with a 11-5 lead. The set went right down to the wire but Okuhara prevailed as she took the set 21-19.

Sindhu began the second set on a strong note, taking a 5-1 lead but Okuhara once again proved her credentials by taking five straight points to reduce the deficit by one point 8-9. The second set was as thrilling as the first one with the scores tied at 20-20 but Sindhu held her nerve to grab two crucial points and forced the match into the decider after winning a stunning 73-shot rally on the final point.

Both the shuttlers were drained out but did not show even the slightest of fatigue as they went all out in the final set. Okuhara opened the title-deciding game with a 5-1 lead but Sindhu soon fought her way back into the game by winning four successive points. Neither of the two could open up a big lead but Sindhu managed to go into the break with a 11-9 lead. The players continued to exchange points and were 17-17 before Sindhu took to two crucial points to make it 19-17.

However, Okuhara did not lose her composure and made it 19-19.  An Unforced error from Sindhu then gave Okuhara first Championship point but the Indian star kept her nerves to make it 20-20. But another error from Sindhu turned out to be decisive for her opponent as the latter won the championship by sealing the final game 22-20 in her favour.
