Ajinkya Rahane is the Test specialist and when he makes a mistake it becomes a concern for the team. In the last Test series against Bangladesh, he dropped at least four catches on the ball of the spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. It was shocking for India’s fielding coach R Sridhar as he also didn’t expect from the experienced player.
India’s Test Vice Captain Ajinkya Rahane is the most trustworthy slip fielder in the Indian team. No one in the team has safe hands like Ajinkya Rahane but it looked that something was wrong with Rahane in Indore Test match. Bowlers show more trust in Rahane as you can’t expect him dropping the catches. R Sridhar was also surprised with those mistakes but he didn’t blame the player for it.
“Totally surprised. Because when Rahane drops a catch, it always surprises me considering the work he puts into preparation. If you look the world over, there are not many like him. He is one of the best when it comes to standing at slips for spinners. When we assessed those drops and did our debriefing, we didn’t respect the conditions that much in Indore,” Sridhar said.
There was plenty of bounce on that surface – R Sridhar pointed out during taking about Ajinkya Rahane’s mistakes
After figuring the condition of the pitch in Indore, Sridhar opines that the pitch had a high bounce than expected because of which Rahane was not able to judge the ball.
“There was plenty of bounce on that surface. With (R) Ashwin being a tall bowler, he was getting a bit of over-spin. I thought Rahane was standing a bit forward than he should have been, and the ball was coming to his chest. He had very less time to react, and he couldn’t do anything about it. It was nothing to do with his skills. It just boils down to positioning,” R Sridhar said to The New Indian Express.
