Dadagiri – A story of how Sourav Ganguly’saggression and captaincy changed the Indian side

In the year 2000, BCCI was running from pillar to post to find a suitable captain. Most of the senior and experienced players were under investigation and the preceding captain had stepped down in the wake of the match fixing scam. Rahul Dravid the man chosen by the BCCI had refused to take up the mantle and the only person whom the BCCI could think of next was the arrogant and aggressive Sourav Ganguly. What Ganguly did during his stint as the captain of the Indian side is nothing short of revolutionary. He not only brought in new talented players selected from the domestic and under 19 circuit but also infused a new way of looking at cricket. His mantra was of constant attack and an aggressive attitude. With his ascendancy as the captain the older way of looking at things and of quiet subjugation in the face of sledging and teasing was over. No longer would India allow the Aussies to get away with sledging or the English with verbal taunts. And leading from the front in all of this was the captain himself. ganguly_lords   Pic- The world initially was surprised with such behaviour from India, whom they had been accustomed to think as pushovers. This led to Ganguly constantly being called by the Match Referee seeking explanations and imposing fines but soon they got the hang of the new order of things. With the aggression part going, a change came in the playing part. With some critical victories like the Australia test where India pulled victory from the jaws of death at Kolkata, the series win against South Africaetc a new power of India rose in the world of International Cricket. SouravGanguly has always been aggressive. He made his one day debut in 1992, where scored cheaply but was dropped from the subsequent matches because he had refused to carry drinks for the other senior players. Then again during his stint at County cricket in England he was called as Lord Snooty and the Prince of Calcutta for his dominating on-field attaire, which made his team-mates and others think as if he owned the place. Little did they know that his upbringing was one of  affluence and his passion for the game made him play it unlike them, who found money in it. With aggression and domination of the best teams of the world, a new era ushered in the world of Indian cricket as well. All those tournaments where India would bow out in the quarterfinals would become the tournaments India won. Soon came the world cup of 2003 and the acid test for Sourav and his boys. Barring a single defeat to Australia in the group stages, India under the stewardship of Ganguly progressed to the Super Sixes and then to the semis. With an unbelievable entry to the finals of the World Cup, celebrations erupted all over India. The then president of BCCI unable to contain his appreciation for Ganguly stated that Sourav had made a place in the hearts and minds of all Indians across the globe and his on field aggression was a hallmark.

In the finals however another story was scripted. Australia won the match despite a valiant performance by India. With heart breaks all around, Ganguly bowed out to the crowd, congratulating the Aussies. He was a leader who was gracious in defeat as in victory. What happened next would forever remain in the annals of Indian cricket history as its darkest chapter. Ganguly got into a spat with the then coach Greg Chapell and was axed from the Indian squad. Though he would reclaim it in style within a year, but he would never be a captain again. Today as India climbs to its new heights as an International cricket team, one cannot but awe the amazing work which SouravGanguly put in to make its foundations. The present captain and almost all the senior players of the present team owe it to him.
