The story of Shreyas Gopal of the Rajasthan Royals has been quite sensational in the 12th season of IPL so far. Yet again he has realized his dream of bagging the wickets of two of the most decorated batsman of the modern generation. He bagged three crucial wickets against Royal Challengers Bangalore and bowled his franchise to a 7 wickets victory. He bagged three wickets which included the scalps of Kohli, De Villiers and Shimron Hetmyer.
Shreyas Gopal who also dismissed Kohli and De Villiers in the same game last year feels that one cannot plan to dismiss stalwarts of the game like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. He said that one can get the wickets of legends like Kohli and de Villiers only by luck. Further adding Gopal quipped that he bowled the wrong uns and they failed to read the line of the ball.
“There was no plan for them (Kohli and de Villers). You can’t make any plan for such great batsmen. I just wanted to bowl a googly and keep it tight as possible,” he said. “They misread the line of the ball and I was fortunate to get their wickets,” Shreyas Gopal said during his interview with the IANS.
Shreyas Gopal has been very consistent for the Rajasthan Royals in Vivo IPL 12 so far and has bagged 8 wickets at an exceptional economy rate of 6.60. Gopal has been a great option for Ajinkya Rahane. It is a great effort from the leggie but he feels that there is no secret to his performances in the tournament so far.
“There is no secret. I am just happy that my hard work in the past one year is paying off. Despite the kind of result we are getting as a team, personally, I had a decent season from the start and will just try to continue and get even better,” he opined.
Shreyas Gopal started of his cricketing career as a premier batsman and slowly gradually turned into a leg spinner. He has proved his batting worth in this tournament as well but his bowling qualities have helped Rajasthan get to winning positions. However, Rajasthan has already lost 6 matches from 8 matches.
“It wasn’t something planned. I didn’t bowl much when I was a kid, but in school cricket, I had to bowl as sometimes we lacked a good team. So, I just continued to contribute both with the bat and ball. It is always good to have both skills in your armoury as it gives you a chance to contribute to your team.”
