Former captains Nasser Hussain and Sourav Ganguly had been the tough rivals in the field, but things have changed now. Hussain has heaped praise on Ganguly’s captaincy. According to him, the former Indian captain had a significant contribution of converting Team India from a friendly team to a tough team.
Hussain and Ganguly’s most memorable encounter was the Natwest Trophy 2002 grand finale. Chasing the target of 326 runs, India lost the wickets of fab four, but the youngsters Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh took away the game from England. To celebrate the victory, Ganguly took off his shirt at the Lord’s balcony and that moment became immortal in the history of cricket.
Nasser Hussain opens up about Team India:
During the chat with the renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, Hussain lauded Ganguly’s captaincy which according to him, turned the fortune of India.
“Before Sourav, India was a nice team, great players, Azhar, Javagal Srinath, they had some fantastic players, but before Sourav, they were a nice team. Very sort of ‘good morning, how you doing’, you know a bit like you Harsha to be honest (light-hearted tone), very nice (and) pleasant. Ganguly made them a tough team,” Nasser said.
Sourav Ganguly is credited to re-build Team India after the allegations of match-fixing surrounded the team. He allowed youngsters like MS Dhoni and backed them.
Sourav Ganguly finely led India:
He is considered as one of the successful captains in Indian cricket history. Under Ganguly’s captaincy, India won 76 ODIs and 21 Tests out of the 146 ODIs, and 49 Tests played. However, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have overtaken Ganguly’s record.
Meanwhile, Nasser Hussain also picked Kane Williamson over Virat Kohli for the best Test captain. Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, India toured New Zealand to play two-match Test series this year. But the Men in Blue were badly defeated as they lost the series with 2-0. Former England captain believes that Kane has built a Test team that is unbeatable in their home. Thus, he feels Williamson heads over Virat.
