Sunil Gavaskar Questions Virat Kohli’s Captaincy Position, Calls Selectors ”Lame Ducks”

Once again, it is the former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar, who is the first to speak on the sensitive issue. The right-handed opening batsman questioned the re-appointment of Virat Kohli even without a single meeting or review of his performance. He also called selectors as Lame Ducks.

Former India captain and legendary Test batsman Sunil Gavaskar has hit out at the BCCI selection committee. And also, he questioned the way captain Virat Kohli is getting to choose his team, in a column for Mid-Day.

Further, Gavaskar questioned the way the selection committee chose the team for the upcoming tour of the West Indies. And also, he even called for players of better stature to be a part of the group.

“That they selected the team for West Indies. Without first having a meeting to select the captain. It brings up the question of whether Virat Kohli is the captain of the team at his. Or, the selection committee’s pleasure,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

Virat Kohli appointment was till ICC World Cup 2019:

Finally, he also questioned the merit of the selection committee suggesting that the current committee does not have players of stature and gets bullied by the team management.

“To the best of our knowledge [Kohli’s] appointment was till the World Cup. After that, it was incumbent on the selectors to meet. Even if it was for five minutes for his reappointment,” he added.

For a brief moment after the World Cup, there was speculation regarding the idea of split captaincy to be discussed by BCCI. An approval would leave Rohit Sharma as the skipper of the limited-overs side, while Kohli would retain his role in the Test format.

“Speaking of lame ducks, the Indian selection committee appears to be one. After the reappointment, [the captain] gets invited to the meeting for his views on selecting the players for the team. By bypassing the procedure. The message that goes out is that while the players like Kedar Jadhav [and] Dinesh Karthik get dropped after the below-expectation performance. The captain continues despite much below-par expectations where the team did not even reach the final,” Gavaskar said.

However, the selection committee, led by MSK Prasad, announced Kohli as the skipper in all three formats after announcing India’s squad for the West Indies tour, last week. Certain sections in the BCCI have also been vocal that splitting the captaincy could be a way forward for the Indian team as they now look to plan for the 2023 World Cup.
