Tamim Iqbal shines for Bangladesh on a rain shortned day

Continuous rain at Mirpur since afternoon forced an early end to the first day’s play of the 2nd Test match as hosts, who won the toss, decided to bat first. Bangladesh, though, will see it as a blessing in disguise as their fragile batting order started to crumble under pressure from a disciplined bowling by kiwi bowlers.

Opener Tamim Iqbal, who fell five runs short of his first century since June 2010, was caught by Williamsom of the bowling Neil Wagner. This dismissal was part of back to back soft dismissals which undermined two impressive sessions with the bat, and hindered the home side’s plans of putting up a large first innings score as Bangladesh went from a dominating position of 208/3 to 228/5.

The New Zealand bowlers, though, lucky on three out of the five wickets to fall, deserved their rewards as the four-man pace attack keept the batsmen on a tight leash. Neil Wagner, who replaced Bruce Martin, took two wickets. He complemented Trent Boult, who pnce again impressed with his pace and swing, but was only able to pick-up one wicket. On the other hand, Doug Bracewell leaked runs at more than five an over in his ten expensive overs. But, it must be mentioned here that Bracewell was the most unfortunate, as Tamim was dropped twice of his bowling.

With his good fortune, Tamim led the way for the hosts. His aggression took Bangladesh to lunch at 111 for 2 but he could not overcome a century drought that has lasted more than three years. A ramp that was intended to go between the wicketkeeper and gully went instead to Kane Williamson who made good ground to his right to take the catch.

Shakib Al Hasan followed Tamim soon in just before the tea interval.  Five minutes into third and final session and rain arrived. As a result, stumps were called from the umpire’s room after the downpour grew steadily heavier in the next hour. The other notable contributors to Bangladesh socre were Marshall Ayub and Mominul Haque who scored 47 and 41 runs respectively. While, for kiwis the wickets were evenly shared among all the bowlers. Neil Wagner lead the way for visitors with two wickets, while Trent Boult, Corey Anderson and Ish Sodhi picked up a wicket each.

Breif scores:

Ban: 228/5 (Tamim Iqbal 85, Marshall Ayub 47) & NZ: (Neil Wagner 13-3-42-2, Corey Anderson 3-0-14-1)
