Kieron Pollard played a blinder of an innings to power Mumbai Indians to a stunning 3-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab.

Chasing 198 in absence of their skipper Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians started brightly. Debutant Siddhesh Lad hit a six and four in the very first over to set the tone. However, the Mumbai Indians openers could not last long. Lad departed in the fourth over after scoring just 15 before Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav took the score past the 50-run mark.

However, both the batsmen returned to pavilion in quick succession to leave Mumbai reeling at 62 for 3.

After ten overs, Mumbai Indians had managed to score just 65 runs at the loss of three wickets.

But just when it looked like Kings XI would have an easy day at the office, Mumbai’s stand-in skipper Kieron Pollard launched a stunning counterassault. Between 10th and 15th over, Mumbai collected 70 runs to bring down the equation to 63 from the final 5 overs. But Mohammed Shami dismissed the Pandya brothers in the 16th over to put the visitors on the top. But Pollard was not ready to give up and completed his fifty off just 22 balls.

The equation was finally down to 15 from the last over and Pollard hit the first ball for a six which was a no-ball. The second one went for a four before Ankit Rajpoot dismissed Pollard for 83. With 2 needed from the final ball, Alzarri Joseph and Rahul Chahar managed to score the winning runs.

Earlier in the game, KL Rahul’s century propelled Kings XI Punjab to the big total of 197 for 4. Asked to bat first, Kings XI Punjab were off to a stunning start with KL Rahul and Chris Gayle firing on all cylinders.

The two openers started slowly and added just ten runs in the first three overs before shifting gears.  Gayle hit Jason Behrendorff for 22 runs in the fifth over to set the tone as the Kings XI raced away to 50 for no loss at the end of the powerplay.  The two went on to add 116 runs for the first wicket before Behrendorff accounted for Gayle (63). Kings XI then seemed to have lost their way but Rahul stayed til the end to ensure the team does not squander the solid start.

At the end of the 18th over, Kings XI were reeling at 159 for 3 before Rahul decided to take the matters in his own hands. In the 19th over of the innings, he hit his Indian teammate Hardik Pandya for three sixes and a four to race away to 92 from 69 in a space of an over. He then reached his first century of the IPL with a double off Jasprit Bumrah in the final over as Kings XI ended on a strong note.
