India to host Junior’s Hockey World Cup

The International Hockey Federation announced today, that Lucknow will host the Junior men’s Hockey World Cup from the 8th to 18th December this year.

The 16 participating nations that will feature in the tournament are Germany who are the defending champions, Argentina, Australia, Austria, host India, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, England, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan and Spain.

“The Hockey Junior World Cup, aside from being one of international hockey’s showcase events, is also a competition that shows the future of our sport. It highlights the best of the best in the years to come. And for such an event, there is no better host than the cradle of Indian hockey,” Hockey India president Narinder Batra said.
“Lucknow is the perfect stage for our young stars to shine. It is a hotbed for hockey, its residents passionate about our great sport. Their energy combined with Hockey India’s experience of delivering first class events will be key to the success of the men’s Junior World Cup,” FIH president Leandro Negre said.

The men’s world cup will take place in December while the women’s World Cup will be held between November 24th and 4th December in Chile. The Indian women’s team will not take part in the tournament.

The last Juniors World Cup was held in New Delhi in 2013. India finished 10th in the last edition. The Indian team had players like Ramandeep Singh, Gurjinder, Akashdeep Singh who are currently part of the senior team.

The 16 teams will be divided into groups of 4. This is a great chance for young Indian stars to showcase their talent to the world and do well in World Cup. The World Cup is the biggest event and to choose Lucknow as the venue of the tournament will do Uttar Pradesh government lot of good to the state.
